Aussie sisters Jess and Noemie Fox have booked a spot in the same Kayak Cross heat, facing off against each other for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Kayak Cross has already become a favourite with fans, the rough yet exhilarating sport keeping spectators on the edge of their seats while competitors put their bodies on the line.
The sisters train and race together on the international circuit, and will join Martina Wegman (NED) and Maialen Chourraut (ESP) in their heat, with the fastest two athletes progressing to the next round.
It was a successful day on the white water for all four Australians, Tim Anderson and Tristian Carter also moving to the next round of racing, the heats and elimination stage of competition.
Dual Paris Olympic gold medalist Jessica had tough competition against K1 silver medallist Elena Lilik (GER) and Viktoria Wolffhardt (AUT).
Needing to finish in the top two, Jess had an early tangle with Elena and crossed the finish line in second.
“I always feel nervous, sitting on the ramp, looking out at the crowd.” Jess said.
“Hearing the pounding heartbeat they play right at the start. It’s normal I think, you are about to battle it out and you never know how it’s going to unfold.
“It’s always hectic. All the competitors are really good. It’s good to get out there and finish top two which was the goal today.”
Making her debut, Noemie went one better than sister Jess, finishing first in her race against athletes from Ukraine, Spain and Canada.
With a clean run and fast time trials already under her belt, Noemie is relishing the experience of competing in her first games while keeping her eyes on the prize; qualifying for finals.
“My plan in my head was to really bulldoze the start but I have a plan in my head if I’m second or third.” Noemie said.
“If you're first you need to be aware of what's going on behind you. I felt some of the carnage behind and thought I was a bit more ahead so let go at the end.
“That’s a really good lesson for me moving forward. To finish full speed and to lunge even if I’m ahead.”
Australian teammate Tim also came out on top in race nine of the men’s competition with a clean run, while Tristan Carter had a tough first run coming in fourth in the last race.
However he did have a second chance to progress, competing in the repechage where he came first.
“I don’t think people realise how tiring it is. By the time you get to the end you are completely exhausted.” Tim said post race.
“It’s a lot of fun bashing around in the kayaks with your friends training.
“You do get injuries, banging around your arms, every now and then you get a knock to the head which is why a lot of us wear full face helmets, we wear mouth guards.” Tim said.
All four Australians will now compete in the Kayak Cross heats, set to take place from 11:30pm AEST on 4 August.
SIsters Jess and Noemie will face off in heat three, while Tim and Tristan will take part in heat six and seven respectively.
The top two athletes from each heat will progress to the quarterfinals on 5 August.
