CANOE SPRINT

What is Canoe Sprint?

Contested on a flatwater course, Canoe Sprint races take place in both the Canoe (C) and Kayak (K). At an international level, this discipline is contested over distances of 200m to 5000m, both individually and in teams of up to four. At the Olympic Games, the maximum distance raced is 500m for women and 1000m for men.
In a canoe, paddlers compete from a striding position with one knee on the deck and the opposite foot forward, using a single-blade paddle on one side at a time, whereas paddlers in a kayak are seated, propelling the boat with a double-bladed paddle.

Things to know

With either one, two or four athletes in the boat, women’s canoe sprint races are contested over a distance of either 200m or 500m, while men’s races are either 500m or 1000m in length.

Canoe Sprint races are distinguished by their three character code followed by the race distance. The first letter is the type of craft (C for canoe or K for kayak), followed by the number of athletes in the boat and then the gender. For example, K2M 500m is kayak men’s doubles over 500m.

Olympic History

Debuting at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, Canoe Sprint featured nine men’s events. This number reduced to eight at the 1948 London Olympics to accommodate the first event for women, the K1W 500m.

Australia’s first medal in this discipline was won at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics by Dennis Green and Wally Brown, a bronze medal in the now discontinued K2 10,000m event. Green competed in a total of five Olympic Games.
